How does a reactor work?
The simplest reactor consists of a single Uranium Cell placed directly next to a Heat Vent. This will produce 5 EU/t when a redstone current is applied to the reactor. The cell and vent must be adjacent horizontally or vertically; if placed on a diagonal, the vent will not cool the cell and the reactor will heat up and explode. In this basic reactor design, the uranium cell produces 4 units of heat per tick. The heat vent will transfer up to 6 units of heat from surrounding components and since the uranium cell produces less than 6 units of heat per tick, it will be effectively cooled by the single heat vent.
What elements are used in a nuclear reactor?
These reactors use both plutonium and thorium, available from centrifuging re-enriched uranium (8 re-enriched gets 1 plutonium, 4 thorium, and 3 depleted cells).
How do explosions disperse?
Because explosions are essentially linear, an easy way to disperse this is to create a chamber with the wire or switch leading out, then another wall or chamber beyond where the switch turns, so the blast reaches the second wall and is stopped.
How many blocks are threatened by an explosion?
On any other side, anything within 5 blocks is threatened. Because explosions are essentially linear, an easy way to disperse this is to create a chamber with the wire or switch leading out, then another wall or chamber beyond where the switch turns, so the blast reaches the second wall and is stopped.
What is nuclear cell?
Nuclear cells are the components that produce energy. Energy production also results in heat, which must be effectively dispersed to avoid reactor explosion.
What is a breeder reactor?
Breeder reactors are nuclear reactors with a purpose of turning Depleted Isotope Cells into Re-Enriched Uranium Cells. In order to make this work, a depleted isotope cell must be charged by being next to an operating nuclear fuel cell. The speed of re-enriching depends on the heat of the reactor.
How much heat does a uranium cell produce?
In this basic reactor design, the uranium cell produces 4 units of heat per tick. The heat vent will transfer up to 6 units of heat from surrounding components and since the uranium cell produces less than 6 units of heat per tick, it will be effectively cooled by the single heat vent.
What happens if you put concrete around a nuclear reactor?
By putting Concrete around it, you’ll contain the crispy radiation that a big nuclear reactor normally produces.
Why does a reactor run faster?
With the increased size, the reactor runs much faster, which means it consumes its fuel faster and produces energy faster. All of its buffers increase in size too (water, fuel, etc).
What does the large 3 on the reactor mean?
The large 3 at the top of the GUI signifies the size of the reactor. This means that the reactor’s size can be expanded (up to size 15) so it runs much faster. The reactor control computer must preferably be in the middle of the reactor, with up to 7 layers below and 7 above and one in the middle, totaling 15.
What happens if a reactor runs out of coolant?
If the reactor runs out of Coolant, its core temperature will rise until it reaches its maximum capacity and melts down.

What is an additional moderator block?
The additional moderator block, the extra heat of which we will attempt to deal with.
How many faces does a reactor have?
The fully-cooled reactor, finished off with two faces of transparent casing.
What coolers can go in a redstone casing?
The simplest coolers to consider are the water, redstone and lapis varieties. Because all of the spaces redstone coolers are valid for (adjacent to at least one cell) are also adjacent to casing, the lapis can go anywhere that the redstone can, and so immediately seems to be the better option. We therefore place eight lapis coolers down in all positions available to them, for a combined cooling power of 8×120 = 960 H/t. In more open designs, where cells are not necessarily near any casing, it is better to go with water and redstone coolers to then set up valid spaces for gold and iron coolers.
How much heat does a fission reactor generate?
The heat generated by these cells, according to the mathematics of heat generation (explained in the main Fission Reactor article), is 8× [50× (2×3/2) + 50×2/3] = 1467 H/t. These cells and moderators would take up 12 blocks, so we would have 15 left. This means we require an average of at least 1467/15 = 97.8 H/t of cooling per block space. Looking at the available coolers’ cooling rates, this is definitely a viable option, so we will go for it.
What is the purpose of moderator blocks?
The moderator blocks (currently Graphite or Beryllium) are used to increase the efficiency of the reactor. For every cell adjacent to each moderator block, additional power and heat is produced, making the reactor more efficient, again at a cost of producing more heat.
How to manage a reactor?
The easiest method for managing your reactor (aside from letting it run on it’s own for eternity) is just to manually turn it on and off when your power storage runs low. And believe it or not, this is a very common method even for the largest and most complex systems. If you take this route, plan on having a lot of energy storage. Otherwise you will be running over to your reactor controller a lot to turn it on and off.
What makes a good reactor?
A good reactor design is simply one that has the most control rods packed in it but still has enough coolant to keep the core heat down so your fuel doesn’t burn up too quickly . The number and length of the fuel rods mainly determines the power output – it’s that simple.
What makes a reactor efficient?
A good reactor design is simply one that has the most control rods packed in it but still has enough coolant to keep the core heat down so your fuel doesn’t burn up too quickly . The number and length of the fuel rods mainly determines the power output – it’s that simple. The coolant helps to manage the temperature which in turn determines the fuel burn up rate. So how hot is too hot? Well, therein lies the problem… and the controversy…
How does reactor efficiency change?
The second thing to realize is that your reactor’s efficiency changes depending on the insertion setting of the control rods. The result is an efficiency curve which peaks at some insertion setting. This is your reactor’s optimal control rod insertion level. Why is this important? Because your reactor can be set to burn a lot of fuel or it can be set to burn as efficiently as possible. The difference can be staggering. Even for a small reactor you can double your fuel efficiency. For the biggest reactors your efficiency can range from 12 kRF/mB at 0 percent insertion to 250 kRF/mB at 99% insertion (which is its optimal level). Yes, it is that drastic!
Can you burn fuel in a reactor?
But it will also burn fuel at the fastest rate possible and this is never a desirable thing. Fuel efficiency of the passive reactor can best be compared to a car. Your fuel efficiency rating is based on Distance/fuel, MPG in the US (Miles per Gallon). Or more to the point, the output / input. You get so many miles of output for your given input of fuel. The same applies to your reactor.
How to manage production of a passive reactor?
An easy and hands-free method for managing production of a passive reactor is using RedNet. BigReactors comes with a RedNet Port block that can be part of the multi-block structure (replace any non-corner part with a RedNet Port). The quickest and easiest way is to add two RedNet Ports to your rector and connect them with a RedNet Cable. Set one port to “Output: Energy Amount” (and hit commit) and the other port to “Input: Change Control Rod Insertion” (again, hit commit button).
Why are passive reactors useful?
But the bigger reason is one of scale. Passive reactors can scale up to 2,000,000 RF/t. This is more output than any active reactor setup I have ever seen (even on Youtube and streams). One of the biggest constraints for a mega-sized active reactor is actually a mega-sized water supply. The reactor’s ability to draw in water fast enough is the first problem but the internal water buffer is also a prohibitive hard constraint. This does not mean that active reactors are invalid, on the contrary they are extremely valid and useful and can expand your power output to incredible levels – if you know how to build and manage them. But the body of knowledge required to do that exceeds the scope of this guide and is better left to it’s own guide.
How to ignite a reactor in Minecraft 1.16?
As of Minecraft 1.16, players in creative mode can right click on the laser focus matrix with a Configurator to instantly ignite the reactor for testing purposes, without needing a laser pulse.
What fuel is used in a reactor?
The reactor will accept both Deuterium and Tritium separately, or D-T Fuel. However, only the former can be used to create a sustained reaction with reasonable quantities, the latter will simply use all that is available regardless of injection rate. A D-T Fuel powered reactor can achieve injection rates of up to 1000 mb/t, however a very large supply of fuel is needed to sustain the reaction. The injection rate determines how fast fuel is pumped into the reactor, and thus how much energy is produced. The minimum injection rate for most reactors is 2, for water-cooled reactors it is 4.
What is the minimum injection rate for a water cooled reactor?
The injection rate determines how fast fuel is pumped into the reactor, and thus how much energy is produced. The minimum injection rate for most reactors is 2, for water-cooled reactors it is 4.
